Donations to independent candidates may be tax deductible under Australian law. The most you can claim in an income year is $1,500 for contributions and gifts to independent candidates.

The Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 prohibits the knowing receipt of donations from foreign donors. Foreign donors include a foreign public enterprise; an entity that is not incorporated in Australia, does not have its head office in Australia, and does not have its principal place of activity in Australia; and an individual who is not an elector, an Australian citizen, an Australian resident, or a New Zealand citizen holding a Subclass 444 (Special Category) visa.
